Facts

  • The building's name, which means "forest spiral" in German, refers to its spiraling floor plan and its forested roof and courtyard.
  • A restaurant occupies the highest floors in the turret at the southeast corner.
  • Spiraling ramps on the roof and around the perimeter make all floors in the building accessible without stairways or elevators.
  • The structure wraps around a landscaped courtyard with a running stream.
  • This is the first high-rise in Germany built out of recycled concrete.
  • The layers of sedimental rock found underneath the site are expressed on the facade in bands of ceramic tiles and colored stucco.
  • Architect Hundertwasser drew the original design on a napkin while eating dinner with his client. The basic design did not change significantly from this original concept.
  • The architect died a few months before the building was completed.
  • Special concrete molds had to be manufactured to produce the structure's unusual rounded forms.
  • The roof supports a garden of maple, beech, and lime trees and has space to accommodate 6 private parties at the same time.
