Facts

  • This hotel was demolished to make way for the Viva Health Building.
  • Celebrated its grand opening on June 15, 1914.
  • Served as Birmingham's "showplace" and grandest hotel from its completion through the 1950s.
  • Imploded on January 27, 1974.
  • After falling into a gradual decline during the 1960s, the hotel closed its doors on April 1, 1972.
  • Replaced the Hillman Hotel as Birmingham's premiere hotel.
  • In 1986, the former Ridgeley Apartments were renovated an reopened as The Tutwiler.
  • Took its name from its developer and Birmingham civic booster Major Edward M. Tutwiler.
