Today many of these buildings are characterised by their "illegal" structures such as small editions like the sun visors above some of the windows to additional dwellings built across their roof tops.
This building characterises a typical "walk up" building of the period found through out the older areas of Hong Kong's New Territories.
"Walk up" refers to the fact that very few buildings of this type had lifts in them being characterised by narrow stair wells, small rooms, "hole in the floor" (squat toilets)/cold water shower head toilet/bathrooms and the like.
Plants growing on the roof is part of the decoration.
