Facts

  • The tower, shaped like a giant upright "L", would have featured different facade treatments on different parts, including reflective glass, horizontal banding, and precast concrete framing.
  • This plan was conceived as an addition to the trade and exhibition center formed by the Merchandise Mart and Apparel Center.
  • Since cancellation of this project, the old loft buildings on the site have been used as a temporary home for the main Chicago Public Library, and were expanded and converted to condominiums in the late 1990s.
  • The midrise section on the southern half was to be partially covered with projecting sections which receded towards the top in series of terraces.
