Facts

  • When completed, the hotel became a symbol of tropical tourist architecture and economic prosperity in Puerto Rico.
  • The hotel was part of a design competition celebrated by the local government in early 1946 to select the design of a new and important hotel that would serve the aspirations of making the city an important tourist destination.
  • In the building design competition there were three architectural firms from Puerto Rico: Ruiz y González, The Office of Henry Klumb, Schimmelpfennig and Toro Ferrer y Torregrosa, and two additional firms from the States: Frederick G. Seelman from Palm Beach and Robert Swartburg from Miami Beach.
  • The winning design was submitted by Toro Ferrer and Torregrosa, a building of modern architectural expression, over other modern and spanish revival proposals.
