  • The facade, inspired by the layered limestone outcroppings along the Great Lakes, is composed of undulating balconies which change slightly from floor to floor, forming a rippling, curtain-like surface.
  • The building is designed to prevent bird collisions, utilizing the irregular curves of the balconies along with special glass that is opaque to birds.
  • Balconies extend as much as 12 feet from the tower's perimeter, and are concentrated outside of living rooms so that bedroom windows have more open views.
  • The balcony depths are calculated to optimize views beyond the building perimeter, and also to optimize sun shading within units according to where it is most needed.
  • Drilling began on the first of more than 300 foundation caissons at 11:20 a.m. on March 12, 2007.
  • During construction the formwork for the curving edges was guided by a global positioning system.
  • The name 'Aqua' is derived from the wave-like forms of the balconies and fits the nautical theme of the other buildings in Lakeshore East.
  • The 736 residential units include 262 condominium units in the upper levels and 474 rental units in the mid-levels, with 55,000 square feet of commercial office space at the first and second floors.
  • This is the world's fourth-tallest building designed by a female architect. Jeanne Gang also designed Vista Tower, which is the tallest. The number two and three spots are held by the Emirates Towers, which were designed by Hazel Wong.
