  • Brackenridge Hospital was the oldest public hospital in Texas having opened on July 3rd, 1884.
  • The hospital originally had a 45-bed capacity.
  • From 1929 to 1941 there were a series of additions to the building with wings added to the north, west and south sides increasing the number of hospital beds to 208.
  • The first intercranial and open-heart surgery operations were held in Austin in this building in 1948 and 1961 respectively.
  • The original main building at Brackenridge Hospital. It was torn down in 1984 to make way for the new Austin Children's Hospital.
