Facts

  • This building has been granted State and National historic status.
  • Northland Lofts has 98 one-bedroom units and 54 two-bedroom units.
  • Designed by George C. Nimmons using an industrial design rooted in the Chicago School of Architecture.
  • Another clear enducement was the nearby barge-navagable Missouri River, which offered additional shipping alternatives.
  • Missouri Pacific offered Sears a two-acre site at in new industrial park it was developing in Kansas City, Kansas, but Sears (which had surpassed Montgomery Ward in growth in the last decade) chose the even larger five acre site in North Kansas City, Mo.
  • According to the 1/1916 edition of "Western Architect," the 1913 structure cost $420,000, measured 220' X 101' and was designed as the first phase of an eight phase mega-plant, but the plans never materialized after World War I began.
  • Sears, Roebuck & Co., only used this building for 12 years before it was sold and replaced with one at Sears Mail Order Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
  • This building was built for Sears, Roebuck & Co. when it ran out of space in a 6-story building in the West Bottoms of Kansas City, Mo., which it had occupied free of charge since 1910.
