The hotel was designed to be the centerpiece of Disney's original concept for EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow). Beneath the hotel was to be a conference center and transportation lobby.
The utopian, civic vision of a 50 acre, dome-covered city of the future, foreseen as a cure for the ills plaguing cities of the 1960s never reached fruition. Hence, the dropping of Epcot's acronym designation, though some individual aspects of the plan can be found in the Epcot existing today.
