Facts

  • The Metropolitan Television Alliance is a coalition of 11 local stations.
  • Needed to replace the antenna atop Century Gateway, this tower is planned to become the tallest freestanding structure in the world.
  • No building in Lower Manhattan is big enough to hold a new antenna. Four sites in New York City had been proposed by the Alliance, but rejected by government authorities.
  • The Alliance favors a design without an observation deck. Whereas Bayonne officials find this acceptable, Jersey City prefers the deck to enhance tourism.
  • Groundbreaking is sought for spring 2003 with completion by spring 2005. Costs are estimated at $200 million, with an extra $40 million for the proposed deck.
