Facts

  • At the time of construction the towers were 43 metres high and the foundations were 10 metres deep.
  • The original gondola measured 10x5 metres.
  • The Biscay Transporter Bridge, is the oldest of its kind in the world.
  • Originally built to connect Las Arenas with a bath house in Portugalete.
  • The bridge was partially destroyed during the Spanish Civil War and was later rebuilt.
  • It was used as a model for similar type of bridges around the world.
  • Regarded as one of the most outstanding iron constructions of the Industrial Revolution.
  • The middle beam can be accessed by the public using an elevator located at the western tower of the structure.
  • This was the first ever bridge to carry people and traffic on a high suspended gondola.
  • Declared a World Heritage Building by UNESCO on July 13, 2006.
