Facts

  • The upper levels of the building were demolished using rubber-tracked excavators and skid steer loaders; a Favco tower crane removed the precast elements.
  • To minimize dust blowing throughout the locality, the building was fully enclosed for the whole demolition process.
  • On a daily basis between 45-55 semi-trailers removed rubble from the site.
  • All of the removed building material was recycled, with the exception of the carpets and the building’s ceiling tiles.
  • Because the majority of the building material was recycled, this project was awarded the 2002 Construction Excellence up to $2 million award by SA Case Earth.
  • When demolition reached level 6, a ramp was built that enabled a 65 tonne excavator fitted with an extended arm to reach up and demolish the structure.
  • The central core than contained the lift shafts and stairs was the last section of the building to be demolished.
