In 1974, the Post Office proposed to build a 93 metre (305 feet) tall office tower on the site of the Central Telephone Exchange. Due to the impact this would have had on historic buildings in the vicinity, a public campaign was waged against the proposals. As opponents of the scheme prepared to fly barrage balloons at a height of 93m on the site - a stunt designed to draw public attention to the scheme - the Post Office withdrew their application.
