Facts

  • Dazzleland which closed in the late 1990s, was home to Australia's only indoor roller coaster.
  • During the 1990s, the upper level of the shopping mall housed an indoor amusement park known as 'Dazzleland'.
  • The building has an 8-level shopping mall fronting Rundle Mall, which houses the Myer department store.
  • This is the most expensive building ever built in South Australia.
  • This is the largest single retail development in the history of South Australia.
  • The building takes up an entire city block.
  • Innovative construction techniques were employed during construction such as concrete filled steel tube columns and pre-fabricated pan floor formwork units, based on the progressive strength method.
  • Contemporary Australian cultural identification is attempted by the use of a colour scheme which uses Australian national colours of green and light yellow (gold implied).
  • The shops are set around a central atrium which is 8 levels and 34m in height and contains a glass roof to allow natural light to filter through from above.
  • Excavation of the Myer Centre's underground carpark is the largest excavation at a building site ever experienced in Adelaide.
  • Originally intended to cost $443 million, however due to huge budget blowouts, when construction was completed in 1991, the final cost was $1 billion.
