Facts

  • One of Montevideo's most visible buildings, the Palacio Municipal was designed as a modern interpretation of the medieval city hall with a high tower on a large, low base.
  • The brick and concrete design is very modern in spirit, but not without decorative flourishes. Many of the ledges and windows show the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright, with a very original execution.
  • The wall along the base is painted with a mural of tropical jungle plants.
  • The original design was 40 meters higher, but it had to be reduced for budgetary reasons.
  • Two glass elevators run up and down the south façade.
  • A reproduction of Michelangelo's David in black stone stands just east of the entrance in the plaza facing Avenida 18 de Julio.
  • The lobby features several artworks, including a reproduction of the Winged Victory statue.
