The church was built in 1839-44 to house the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, and was originally known as Assembly Hall. It later became the Tolbooth St. John's Church, or St. John's Highland Church.
In 2000, the building was converted into a venue for visitors to Edinburgh, featuring a cafe, gift shops and a ticket office during the Edinburgh Festival. However, it is still commonly known as Tolbooth Kirk.
