Facts

  • The church was built in 1839-44 to house the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, and was originally known as Assembly Hall. It later became the Tolbooth St. John's Church, or St. John's Highland Church.
  • In 2000, the building was converted into a venue for visitors to Edinburgh, featuring a cafe, gift shops and a ticket office during the Edinburgh Festival. However, it is still commonly known as Tolbooth Kirk.
