Facts

  • The design was an eye-catching combination of triangular bays (7 along its width) and pointed balconies arranged in diagonal rows.
  • Each balcony was to be a triangular prism fitting into the niche between the triangular ridges.
  • A long breezeway was planned around a plaza on the east side, overlooking Lake Shore Drive and the convention center.
  • This early design for a convention center hotel predates the McCormick Inn by 13 years. It was supposed to be built from 1961 to 1962.
  • The projecting triangle motif was repeated along the breezeway in the design, and a glass rotunda was planned in front of the tower at the entrance.
