Facts

  • This building is currently vacant, awaiting either renovation or demolition.
  • Lee Plaza was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
  • As of late December, 2005, the roof had been illegally stripped of its copper facing by metal scrapper, leaving only the oxidized aluminium showing.
  • The property was originally built by Detroit developer Ralph T. Lee, and included 220 luxury apartments, an elegant lobby, dining rooms, lounges, and a ballroom.
  • This structure was originally built as a prestigious residential hotel, a very popular concept at the time of its completion. It was then used as housing for senior citizens, and finally shuttered in the early 1990s.
