Facts

  • Famous Lithuanian bishop Motiejus Valancius is buried in crypt.
  • Cathedral has nine altairs, the high altair is baroque style and was built back in 1775.
  • Church became cathedral in 1895 and was elevated to basilyka in 1921 becoming the only gothic basilyka in Lithuania.
  • There is a tomb of writer and priest Maironis near the cathedral.
  • Church was opened in 1408, however, construction was carried until Russian-Swedish war in 1655-1660, when forms of rennaisance and baroque were added.
