The Mabley & Carew Department Store was housed in this building until their sale to Dayton-based Elder-Beerman. The store was eventually closed and torn down in the late 1980s to make way for a new tallest building in Cincinnati, Fountain Square West.
Neither Fountain Square West proposal was built, and today this is the site of a Lazarus Department Store. Fifth Third Bank has purchased the air rights above the store and may exercise the option to build Fountain Place in the future.
At the time of demolition, the building sported a modern facade with few windows.
