During the demolition of the two tower blocks at Queen Elizabeth Square on 12th September 1993, Mrs. Helen Tinney, aged 61, was killed by flying debris. Exclusion zones around demolition sites have since been increased, and the times of demolitions are often kept secret to avoid a crowd gathering.
Queen Elizabeth Square, designed by Sir Basil Spence, was fashioned after Le Corbusier's Unite d'Habitation in Marseilles. They were the first multi-storey tower blocks to be demolished in Glasgow.
