Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium
STD, Texas Memorial Stadium

Structure in General

existing [completed]

  • Largest sporting events structure in Austin. At the time of it's construction it was also Texas' largest.
  • There are 500 spaces of surface parking.
  • The first game played at the stadium was on November 8, 1924 when Texas lost to Baylor 28-10.
  • Originally built in 1924, there were expansions to the stadium in 1972, 1999 and 2008. None of the sections of the stadium from 1924 remain today. Those areas were demolished to make way for later expansions of the stadium.
  • Home of the University of Texas Longhorns football team.
  • On August 30, 2008, the stadium set a new record attendance with 98,053 people. This is also a new state record for the most people watching a football game.
  • In 2006 a jumbotron screen was added to the stadium at a construction cost of $8 million (US). At 55 feet tall and 134 feet long, it was the largest HD screen in the world at the time.
  • The 'Memorial' in the name of the stadium is in honor of World War I veterans. In a new expansion plan, a new 70-foot long monument will be built at the entrance to the stadium with the names of over 5,000 Texans who died in World War I.
