Facts

  • Cathedral in this place for the first time was built back in 1251 by king Mindaugas, who was the first christian king of Lithuania. In 1387 cathedral was rebuilt to gothic style, but because it stood on unstable land, it was rebuilt several times since then, so it is mixture of various styles, but baroque is dominating one.
  • Cathedral tower was built on the ruins of Vilnius Lower Castle's guard tower.
  • Three statues of saints at the top of the cathedral were destroyed by Soviets and rebuilt after independence
