Facts

  • The adjacent UMB Bank purchased the building on a speculative basis to protect its major investments in the area and then demolished the old building.
  • The former Columbia Building sat abandoned for more than two decades. Its deteriorated condition, narrow frontage and lack of parking lead to its demise.
  • The 919 Garage and Rooftop Garden can now be found atop this site.
  • This bank merged with Union National and moved across the street to become Columbia-Union National Bank in the mid-1970s.
  • When a Dallas developer began rehabbing the 35-story Fidelity National Bank and Trust Apartment project, the old Columbia site was purchased for a multi-story parking garage to serve the new residents of the landmark skyscraper.
