The construction of the central spire started in 1563 and was finished in 1569. This made the building 153m high, surpassing Notre-Dame de Strasbourg.
On April 30, 1573 when all faithful were collected for Ascension Day in the Cathedral, the spire and tower collapsed and crashed into the transept. Miraculously, only two people were injured. The tower was never rebuilt.
