Facts

  • Replaced the Meier and Frank Building.
  • The original Doyle design called for matching the building's facade with the old yellow brick and stucco detailing on the original Meier and Frank Building.
  • Whidden and Lewis designed the original Meier and Frank Store in 1897-98.
  • A 7-story atrium was added as part of the 2006-2007 renovation.
  • In 2007. the building was renamed as the Meier & Frank Square.
  • Macy's officially opened to the public in October, 2007.
  • Portland's grand department store since 1857.
  • 2003 redevelopment proposal: anchor store on floors 1-5 (plus four lower floors) and reuse of floors 6-16 for residential, hotel and/or office, with the costs at $63 million including a $22 million seismic upgrade.
  • This was local architect A.E. Doyle's first major commission.
  • The building was constructed in 3-installments: 1909, 1915, and 1932.
  • Years after the building's completion, A. E, Doyle called the buidling a "big dry goods box punched full of holes for light".
  • The building was the first building in Portland to utilize escalators.
  • In 2005: According to Bruce Warner, the US $137 million redevelopment of the Meier & Frank store shall begin in January or February of 2006.
  • Initially, the building featured 19 elevators, 7 escalators, and 6 spiral chutes.
