Facts

  • The first brick gothic church in the United States, St. Paul's was noted in Ripley's Believe It Or Not as "the church built without a nail".
  • Since no contractor at the time would estimate the cost of such innovative construction, the church's parisioners themselves were enlisted as the construction workers with the architect as official contractor.
  • The twin steeples were modeled after the spires of St. Cortin's Cathedral in Quimper, France.
  • Architect Henry J. Schlacks, the most notable ecclesiastical architect in Chicago, called this his favorite of his own churches in the city.
