Facts

  • Located on a highly visible site, at a six-way intersection in west Lake View.
  • The building suffered a major fire on October 20, 1950, which destroyed the roof and choir loft. By the orders of Cardinal Stritch it was rebuilt in its original form.
  • Built to serve a German-American community around Lincoln Avenue. The parish still offers mass in German, the last in the Chicago Archdiocese to do so.
  • St. Alphonsus Parish occupies the whole block, including the Athenaeum to the south which is used by several theater groups and Chicago's second-largest opera company.
