Facts

  • Widely regarded as one of Bristol's best high-rise buildings, the Bristol & West Building was first mooted in 1962, when successive plans for a new corporate headquarters for the building society were rejected. Initially, the maximum height allowed for the building was set at 30.5 metres (100 feet) in order to respect a sight line between two landmarks, but this was gradually increased, first to 36.6m, then 55.5m and finally 61m.
  • The Bristol & West Building was the first building to contribute towards a network of elevated pedestrian walkways linking buildings throughout Bristol city centre, much of which has now been demolished.
