Facts

  • Christ Church was built on the site of a plague pit.
  • Despite an original budget of £7,000, the church ended up costing £40,000.
  • The interior was remodelled somewhat unsympathetically in the 1860s by Ewan Christian, architect of Christ Church Forest Hill.
  • The vaulted interior is half the height of St. Paul's Cathedral, whilst new oak galleries look down on a newly restored Purbeck stone floor.
  • The final stage of a 30-year restoration project costing £10m was completed in September 2004, finally returning the church to Hawksmoor's original glory.
  • Cited in Simon Jenkins' 'England's Thousand Best Churches'.
  • The church is Grade I Listed.
