  • World's first domed major sports complex.
  • Billed as "The Eight Wonder of the World" when it opened in 1965.
  • Home to the Houston Oilers National Football League team 1968 - 1996. The Oilers franchise moved to Tennesse in 1997.
  • The Astrodome opened on April 9, 1965.
  • Interior ceiling height: 208 feet.
  • Dome span: 642 feet.
  • The playing field of the stadium sits 25 feet below grade level.
  • Site of 1992's Republican National Convention.
  • Used as temporary shelter for victims of Hurricane Katrina, who were originally housed in New Orleans' Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
