Facts

  • This building is the setting for the movie Rosemary's Baby directed by Roman Polanski.
  • Once a residence of John Lennon of The Beatles; the world famous singer was shot to death on December 8, 1980 near this building.
  • When the building was completed, most of the upscale apartments stood tens of blocks to the south, so the legend goes that the elite remarked that they could as well have built this residence in Dakota or some other equally distant place; hence the building name.
  • One of the most luxurious buildings in the city at the time of completion, this residence featured an elevator for horse carriages.
  • Upon completion, this was the city's largest apartment building.
