Saint Mary of Sorrows provides a counterpoint to the Niagara Mohawk Building on Genesee Street downtown.
Built for a German congregation, the Rhenish Romanesque Revival design was strongly influenced by Germany's Worms Cathedral.
The church is laid out as a Latin cross. The bright interior is lit by stained glass windows, which include representations of the Seven Dolors, or sorrows, of the Virgin Mary. Wide-spanning arches on slender columns and support the ribbed vault of the nave.
In 1947 a major fire caused serious damage. Repairs cost $500,000.
In recent years it has been threatened with demolition.
