Facts

  • Built as a resort hotel on Lake Michigan, equivalent to the north side's Edgewater Beach Hotel.
  • Originally set in several acres of open grounds, which were eventually parceled out to developers for residential development.
  • During World War II the hotel was converted to the headquarters of an army base, which it remained until its demolition.
  • The building was L-shaped with rounded corners. The north wing overlooked Lake Michigan, and the west wing overlooked East End Park to the south.
  • The Regents Park South apartment building currently occupies the hotel's site.
  • When it was built the hotel was on beachfront property. Subsequent landfills have pushed the shoreline east for the extension of Burnham Park and Lake Shore Drive.
