Facts

  • Wait Chapel dominates the campus of Wake Forest University, located several miles north of downtown Winston-Salem.
  • Built in a Neo-Georgian style, exterior materials include Jefferson-style brick from Virginia; stucco columns; wrought iron, granite, and limestone trim; and copper on the roof and steeple. Interior materials include Red Oak paneling and woodwork; limestone walls; slate floors; and handcrafted metalwork. Eight hundred window panes of multi-colored handcrafted glass were imported from Germany.
  • President Harry S. Truman assisted in the groundbreaking on October 15, 1951.
  • Wait Chapel was named for Samuel Wait (1789-1867), a leading Baptist minister in early 19th Century North Carolina and first President of Wake Forest College.
  • Presidential debates were held here in 1988 between George Bush and Michael Dukakis, and again in 2000 between George W. Bush and Al Gore.
