Facts

  • Designed by Adrian D. Smith, FAIA, RIBA Design Partner at Skidmore Owings & Merrill LLP.
  • The building's expressionist form is inspired by frequency waves, the basis of telecommunications.
  • Although the repetitive floors are identical, they are each rotated from the plan of the floor below, just as they are in 30 St. Mary Axe.
  • A visual indicator of these floor rotations is a unique spiral housing hanging gardens around the building's core.
  • The project began construction in 1996 but was halted at podium level due to a financial situation within China Post.
  • The project got eventually replaced by the Xiamen International Center which now occupies the site, with construction starting in 2014 and being finished in 2019.
