Facts

  • The fifth tallest monument in the United States; the next tallest is Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial in Put-in-Bay, Ohio.
  • After reaching a height of 175 feet, construction was suspended in 1918 because of US involvement in World War I. Construction was resumed in 1922.
  • The world's tallest concrete obelisk was built to commemorate the birthplace of Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America during the US Civil War.
  • The monument is part of the 19-acre Jefferson Davis State Historic Site.
