Facts

  • The original historic basilica-cathedral suffered a severe fire in 1968 that left only vestiges of the past grand structure standing. These remaining ruins formed part of the new cathedral structure building and site built immediately east of the historic facade, within the footprint of the original structure. The latter modernist reconstructed cathedral was designed by local architect Etienne Gaboury, It is still recognized as one of the City's great monuments.
