Facts

  • The Woodruff Building is considered to be Springfield's first skyscraper. It was built by local attorney and investor John T. Woodruff.
  • It was designed by Frank W. Hunt, who also was tragically killed in the building on August 28, 1922, when his head was crushed by an elevator. An investigation determined he was measuring the thickness of the floor slab through the third floor elevator shaft when the accident occurred.
  • The building was expanded and refaced in 1959. A 25-foot 10-story addition was added to the west side of the U-shaped building.
  • The ‘Sky Eleven’ name is derived from it being the city's first skyscraper and the year it opened in 1911.
