Facts

  • The original dome was replaced by a tall narrow lantern, which was gilded in the 1970's at the time of the building's restoration.
  • The Dubuque County Courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
  • Though detailed in Beaux-Arts French Classical style, it appears more "Victorian" in appearance due to its vertical massing, the contrast of dark brick walls and limestone trim, and the relationship of individual details.
  • The facade consists of a two-story basement followed by a two-story section of piers, pilasters, and arches above. Attention is called to the entrance by a deep arch which reaches into an attic pediment.
