Facts

  • The Luzerne County Courthouse was designed in a Neo-Renaissance Beaux-Arts style.
  • Faced in limestone, it is cruciform in plan with Corinthian porticos on three sides. Surmounting the structure is a large dome surrounded by four minor ones.
  • The interior is finished in marble, with mosaics and murals telling the story of local history. A marble staircase leads from the rotunda to the second floor.
  • The subject of great controversy during its design and construction, the building was originally planned to be built in the Public Square.
  • It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
