Facts

  • Redevelopment will focus initially on the adjacent Hotel Sterling.
  • A second phase consistiing of an 8-14 story building could follow on the tower site depending on the success of phase one.
  • Demolition was expected to be completed in the first half of 2006, but was delayed until February 2007 by legal challenges to needed access to neighboring property.
  • Built as a competing hotel to the neighboring Hotel Sterling , the Plaza tower was bought by the Sterling's owners in 1927.
  • CityVest, a nonprofit organization that owns and is redeveloping the Sterling property, received permission from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in late 2005 to demolish the 14-story tower.
  • State approval for demolition was necessary since it is listed as part of the River Street Historic District on the national historic registry.
  • Narrow hallways and low ceilings made the tower unfeasible for redevelopment.
