Facts

  • The building is named for Eugene McCarthy, Congressman from 1949-1959 and US Senator from 1959-1971. McCarthy unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic nomination for President in 1968 on a strong anti-Vietnam War platform.
  • This is one of the tallest post office buildings in the United States.
  • This and the neighboring Ramsey County Government Center East are the only highrise buildings in downtown St. Paul built between the Mississippi River and Kellogg Boulevard.
  • Postal officials announced their intention to move these postal operations to suburban Eagan by 2009. This building and its prime riverfront views will be available for redevelopment.
