Facts

  • The West Virginia State Capitol is constructed of a steel frame faced with buff limestone and marble in a Beaux-Arts, Italian Renaissance style.
  • The 23 karat gold-leafed dome is the largest state capitol dome in the country. It is five feet higher than the dome of the United States Capitol.
  • Limestone pillars support Roman Corinthian porticos at the north and south entrances. Brass and copper doors beneath each portico are decorated with elm, hickory, beech and maple leaves representing West Virginia's native hardwood trees.
  • Cass Gilbert also designed the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul and the Arkansas State Capitol in Little Rock.
  • Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
