Facts

  • The first air-conditioned hotel in the United States, the Statler Hotel, later the Gateway Hotel, operated continually until 1987, at which time the building was closed.
  • The Renaissance Grand Hotel consists of the original Statler Hotel tower and a 23-floor addition, which was constructed in 2001-2002. The HRI Group developed the property, which opened in February 2003.
  • Fire Insurance Maps indicate that the original Statler Hotel tower was 256 feet tall.
  • It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
  • The new tower addition stands on the site formerly occupied by the Lindell Building.
  • The new addition was originally proposed at 38 floors but was later reduced to match in height with the Statler Hotel.
