The steeple of Saint Euphemia's is the tallest structure in Istria.
The church contains the sarcophagus of martyr Saint Euphemia, which is said to have been brought to the city in 800 from Constantinople in order to save it from destruction at the hands of the ruling iconoclasts. It dates from the 3rd Century AD and is made of marble. Saint Euphemia's sarcophagus is 208 cm long, 195 cm high and 95 cm wide.
The church and steeple were designed by Venetian architects Giovanni Scalferotto and Giovanni Dozzi and the steeple is said to have been modeled after the Campanile at San Marco's in Venice.
