Facts

  • The Macomb County Building is clad in gray limestone.
  • The piers are topped with granite busts of military figures, alternating with spandrels carved with zia-zag patterns.
  • Strong continuous piers and recessed windows grouped in vertical bands give a strong vertical effect.
  • The cornerstone was laid on July 1, 1931.
  • The upper stories are stepped back, and two-story high entry pavilions project from the center of three sides.
  • The building was partially occupied in 1933 but because of financial problems caused by the Great Depression was not substantially completed until 1944.
