Facts

  • The church contains the royal vault where many members of the Dutch royal family are buried, including William of Orange.
  • On 3rd May 1536 the tower was struck by lightning, destroying part of the church.
  • On 12th October 1654, the church was damaged by an explosion caused by the detonation of 90 lbs of gunpowder in the nearby Delft powder-magazine.
  • Restoration work carried out on the church in 1933 saw the insertion of concrete piles to stabilize the church against subsidence.
  • The church tower can be ascended by 356 steps.
