Facts

  • Built on the former site of the Castle Inn which was razed in 1919. The Castle Inn was formerly known as the Hotel Fillmore, a Victorian home once owned by Millard Fillmore (1800-1874), thirteenth President of the United States.
  • British developer BSC Group purchased the building for $3.5 million in 2006.
  • Renovations will also repair the building's elevators and core systems, and restore details to their original appearance.
  • A 10-story, 450-500 space parking deck above a 3-story wing is proposed to be added to the building's east side at Mohawk, Franklin, and Genesee streets.
  • BSC's planned renovation includes retail space on floors 1-2, office space on floors 3-6, a 150-room hotel on floors 7-9, and residential condominiums on floors 10-18.
  • Originally containing 1100 rooms, floors were gradually converted to office space beginning in 1948 as demand waned. The hotel finally closed in 1984 and renamed Statler Towers.
  • A renovation to convert the building into condos failed in the early 2000s. In 2011, sections of the lower floors were renovated, but as of 2021 the upper floors remain vacant.
