Facts

  • In 1947 the spire of the tower was hit by a KLM-airplane during bad weather.
  • In 1976 the spire of the tower was completely detroyed by a hurricane and rebuilt in 1980.
  • In 1998 the restoration of the building was completed, which restored the damage caused by the collapse of the spire of the tower in 1976.
  • Tallest building in Leeuwarden from 1884 to 2002 (allowing for a possible gap in its reign when the spire was destroyed by a hurricane); surpassed by the Achmea-Toren.
